CONCUSSION / TBI & HYPERBARICS
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a nondegenerative, non-congenital insult to the brain from an external mechanical force, possibly leading to permanent or temporary impairment of cognitive, physical, and psychosocial functions, with an associated diminished or altered state of consciousness.
CONCUSSION, TBI & HYPERBARICS
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an acquired injury to the brain caused by an external mechanical force. It can result in temporary or permanent impairments in cognitive, physical, and psychosocial function, often accompanied by altered or diminished consciousness. TBI is one of the leading contributors to disability and health loss worldwide, with global estimates suggesting an annual incidence ranging from 27 to 69 million cases.
All concussions are classified as traumatic brain injuries (TBI), though they vary in severity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 138 individuals in the United States are impacted by TBI each day. The most common causes include falls, blunt force trauma, motor vehicle accidents, violent assaults, and blast-related injuries.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to support recovery from traumatic brain injury (TBI) by reducing cerebral hypoxia and neuroinflammation, while enhancing blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain. These effects may contribute to improved neurological function and cognitive outcomes.
Additionally, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been reported to work synergistically with conventional treatments, including intensive rehabilitation programs, to help accelerate recovery in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
