PTSD & HYPERBARICS

The potential of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) lies in its capacity to stimulate neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections.

PTSD & HYPERBARICS

Historically, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been widely used by medical professionals to support and accelerate the healing of physical injuries. More recently, however, its potential applications have expanded, with growing interest in using HBOT as an adjunctive treatment for brain-related conditions, including chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The potential of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) lies in its capacity to stimulate neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections. Research has shown that alternating between high and normal oxygen levels can activate a range of biological processes, including stem cell mobilization, angiogenesis, and mitochondrial repair. This response, known as the “hyperoxic-hypoxic paradox,” has been associated with enhanced brain connectivity and function. It has already demonstrated cognitive benefits in conditions such as post-concussion syndrome and stroke.

The results were encouraging: 68% of participants in the HBOT group experienced at least a 30% reduction in PTSD symptoms by the end of the treatment period. In contrast, only 4% of those in the control group showed similar improvement.

Additionally, 39% of individuals who received HBOT achieved full symptom remission, whereas none of the participants in the placebo group experienced the same outcome.

Beyond the reduction in PTSD symptoms, the HBOT group also demonstrated significant improvements in depressive symptoms, along with a marked decrease in self-reported stress and anxiety levels.
